General Description
Methyl cyanoacetate is an intermediate in the organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals and some biologically active compounds used in synthetic agriculture. It reacts with aromatic aldehydes in a calcite- or fluorite-catalyzed Knövenagel condensation to give the corresponding arylidene maleonitriles and ( E )-α-cyanates.
Applications
Methyl cyanoacetate can be used to synthesize various 1,2,5-tricarbonyl compounds.
